Mr. Corman season 1 episode 4, titled "Mr. Morales" explores the complexities of relationships both romantic and platonic. Josh's struggles with his own issues take a bit of a backseat in this episode as we delve into the lives of other characters in his life.
The episode follows Josh's colleague, Victor Morales, who is going through a divorce and looking for someone to talk to. Josh volunteers to be that person and the two end up spending the day together. The dynamic between the two is interesting as Victor opens up about his marriage, his soon-to-be ex-wife and even reveals that he is still wearing his wedding ring despite the divorce proceedings.
Josh, on the other hand, struggles to connect with his students at school and, as usual, is plagued by self-doubt. Even when he tries to open up about his own problems to Victor, he ends up feeling like he hasn't expressed himself properly or that he hasn't really been heard. The episode does a great job at exploring the nuances of communication and how it's often difficult to truly express how we feel.
Elsewhere, Josh's roommate, Alex, has a new girlfriend, Brynn, who he's head over heels for. Josh is initially happy for his friend but soon realizes that he's the third wheel in their relationship. Alex and Brynn are constantly looking for time alone, leaving Josh feeling left out. Alex tries to make it up to him by inviting him to a dinner party at their house but even then, things don't go as planned.
The dinner party, which was supposed to be a fun night with friends and colleagues turns into a disaster when Josh's colleague, Jeff, who also happens to be Victor's boss, gets drunk and starts hitting on Brynn. Things take a turn for the worse when Jeff reveals that he's been cheating on his own wife with multiple women and the group is left shocked and disgusted.
Throughout the episode, we see Josh grappling with his own feelings of loneliness and isolation. He tries to connect with Victor, with his students and with his friends but nothing seems to be working. He's constantly second-guessing himself and trying to figure out what he's doing wrong.
The episode ends on a somewhat hopeful note with Josh finally reaching out to his students and starting to form connections with them. He also has a heart-to-heart with Victor and the two seem to have formed a genuine bond. While Josh's own problems may not have been solved, he's starting to realize that he's not alone in feeling lost and that there are people in his life who care about him.
Overall, "Mr. Morales" is a great exploration of how relationships can be affected by our own insecurities and how difficult it can be to truly connect with others. It's a thoughtful and well-written episode that showcases the strengths of the show's writing and acting.
