In Episode 4 of Mrs. America, tensions continue to rise as both sides of the ERA fight gear up for their next moves. Phyllis Schlafly and her followers are energized by the recent defeat of the ERA in Illinois, and Phyllis is determined to continue blocking the amendment's ratification. To that end, she meets with potential donors to try and secure their financial support for her cause.

Meanwhile, Gloria Steinem and her fellow feminists are focused on building support for the ERA through grassroots organizing. They plan a series of events, including a protest outside a Democratic fundraiser, and a meeting with members of Congress to try and persuade them to support the amendment.

As the fight over the ERA intensifies, tensions also heat up within the feminist movement itself. Betty Friedan becomes frustrated with Gloria's leadership, feeling that she is too focused on media attention and not enough on organizing. She also feels that Gloria is dismissive of Betty's own contributions to the movement, which further strains their relationship.

Things come to a head between the two women at a gathering of feminist leaders, where Betty confronts Gloria in front of their peers. This causes a rift within the movement, with some siding with Betty and others supporting Gloria.

As the episode comes to a close, both sides continue to rally their supporters, with the fight over the ERA showing no signs of slowing down.
