Mushi-Shi (Original Japanese Version) season 1 episode 7, titled "Raindrops and Rainbows," follows the titular Mushi-Shi Ginko as he investigates a small town plagued by a mysterious illness. The episode opens with a group of children playing in a field during a rainfall, only for them to discover that the water has a peculiar effect on living beings - it causes them to slowly turn into dolls. Ginko arrives in the town soon after to investigate the phenomenon, and discovers that the cause is a type of Mushi that feeds on the memories of its hosts.
The Mushi, called the Koe Mushi, attaches itself to a host and slowly erases their memories, replacing them with illusions of happier times. The host gradually loses touch with reality and eventually turns into a doll, completely devoid of memories or emotion. Ginko meets a woman named Akoya, whose husband has already been turned into a doll, and he sets out to find a way to stop the Koe Mushi's spread and save the remaining villagers.
Ginko's investigation leads him to a young girl named Kaya, who is immune to the Koe Mushi's effects and possesses a unique ability to see the memories of others. Using Kaya's abilities, Ginko is able to trace the Koe Mushi's origin to a nearby river, and he sets out to destroy the Mushi's eggs before they can hatch and spread further.
However, Ginko soon discovers that destroying the eggs would require him to destroy the rainbows that they are hidden within, and in doing so, he would cause the rain in the village to cease entirely. Caught between sacrificing the livelihood of the village or saving them from the Koe Mushi's grasp, Ginko is faced with a difficult decision. In the end, with the help of Kaya and the villagers, Ginko comes up with a plan to save both the rain and the village.
"Raindrops and Rainbows" is a poignant and thought-provoking episode that explores themes of memory, sacrifice, and the delicate balance between nature and human life. Through Ginko's investigation and the villagers' struggles, the episode reminds viewers that life is not always fair, and that sometimes difficult choices must be made in order to preserve the greater good.
With its beautiful and haunting visuals, atmospheric score, and meaningful storytelling, "Raindrops and Rainbows" is a standout episode of Mushi-Shi that is sure to leave a lasting impression on viewers.
