Bridie 1928 is the ninth episode of the first season of the Australian children's television series My Place, which follows the story of thirteen children, all of whom have lived in the same pre-Federation terrace house over the course of 130 years. In this episode, the audience is introduced to Bridie, a young girl living in 1928.
Bridie is a curious and adventurous girl who loves to explore the world around her. She lives with her parents and six siblings in a small house with a big garden. Bridie is excited to start her new job as a telegraph messenger, a position that only men usually hold. She works hard and dreams of one day becoming a telegraph operator.
However, Bridie's dreams are shattered when she discovers that her father has been fired from his job as a tram driver. With her family struggling to make ends meet, Bridie is forced to give up her job in order to help out. She takes on odd jobs around the neighborhood, running errands and doing laundry for the local shopkeepers.
As Bridie moves through her day-to-day life, she is confronted with the harsh realities of the Depression-era. She sees people begging on the streets, families going hungry, and workers being exploited by their bosses. Despite these challenges, Bridie never loses hope. She is determined to find a way to help her family and achieve her dreams.
One day, Bridie meets Mr. Higgins, a wealthy businessman who owns several local shops. He takes a liking to Bridie and offers her a job as his personal assistant. Bridie is thrilled at the opportunity and works hard to impress Mr. Higgins. She proves to be a valuable employee, helping him to manage his books and run his business more efficiently.
As Bridie's family continues to struggle, she sees an opportunity to use her new position to help them. She approaches Mr. Higgins for a loan, promising to work extra hard to pay him back. Mr. Higgins agrees, and Bridie takes on more responsibilities at the shop in order to earn the money she needs.
With her determination and hard work, Bridie is able to help her family and achieve her dreams. She saves enough money to pay off the loan and even begins to take telegraph classes in her spare time. She feels a sense of pride and accomplishment knowing that she is able to provide for her family and pursue her own goals.
In the end, Bridie learns that anything is possible if you work hard and believe in yourself. She inspires the audience with her strong spirit and unwavering determination, showing that even in the toughest of times, there is always hope for a better future.
