In Portlandia season 8 episode 6, titled "You Do You," the eclectic and kooky town of Portland, Oregon is the backdrop for a series of skits that poke fun at modern culture, the obsession with self-expression, and the pressure to conform to societal norms.

The episode's opening skit features a couple attempting to rent a tiny home in a new Portland community called "The Co-Terns." It turns out that this tiny home community is not as tiny as they initially thought, with each home only being large enough for one person. The couple is forced to figure out which one of them will take the tiny home and which will be forced to move into the community's communal bike shed.

Next up is a sketch that takes aim at the ubiquitous "self-care" trend that has swept the nation, with eager folks spending hundreds of dollars on healing crystals, yoga retreats, and other wellness products in the hopes of achieving inner peace and well-being. A woman attends a self-care workshop where she learns that the key to true happiness is to "love yourself more than anyone else ever has or ever will." She takes this lesson to heart, much to the chagrin of her partner and friends, who become exasperated by her newfound self-centeredness.

Another skit features a couple who are trying to have some romantic alone time, but are constantly interrupted by their well-meaning roommates. The couple resorts to hiding in a closet to avoid their roommates, but things take a turn for the worse when the roommates mistake their hiding place for a secret room that has been tempting them for years. Chaos ensues as the miscommunication unfolds.

In another skit, a man tries to use his refusal to conform as a way to impress his date, but ends up losing her when he takes it too far. The man is so committed to his non-conformist ways that he refuses to drink water in a glass, opting instead to drink it directly from a nearby river. The date is mortified and ends up leaving him, frustrated by his stubborn refusal to be like everybody else.

Later in the episode, we see a group of friends who are attempting to plan a surprise birthday party for one of their members. However, they become increasingly disorganized and distracted as they try to cater to everyone's individual interests and needs. One person wants to have a petting zoo, another wants a karaoke machine, and still others want to have an elaborate game of Dungeons and Dragons. The group eventually realizes that they are trying too hard to please everyone and decide to simply let the birthday girl "do her own thing" and have the best birthday party ever.

Finally, the episode wraps up with a skit that parodies the overblown spectacle of modern music festivals. A group of friends attend a music festival called "Flaming Riverfest," which promises to be the "most epic festival experience ever." The festival turns out to be a complete disaster, with the attendees becoming stuck in a giant mud puddle and having to resort to drastic measures to get out.

Overall, Portlandia season 8 episode 6 is a funny and insightful commentary on the quirks and foibles of modern society. The skits are cleverly written and well-acted, and the show's irreverent humor is sure to be a hit with fans of off-beat comedy.
