Ep 9. New Lives, New Home

In episode 9 of Property Brothers: Forever Home season 2, entitled "New Lives, New Home," hosts Jonathan and Drew Scott help a couple transform their outdated home into a modern and functional space that reflects their new chapter in life.

The homeowners, who recently retired and became grandparents, were in need of a space that could accommodate their growing family while also being suitable for aging in place. The couple desired a more open and inviting layout where they could entertain their loved ones and create new memories together.

To achieve their vision, Jonathan and Drew had to take down walls, reconfigure the layout, and completely revamp the outdated interior. As with all their projects, the hosts worked closely with the couple to understand their needs, preferences, and lifestyle.

The first step was to knock down the wall separating the kitchen from the dining room to create an open-concept layout, perfect for entertaining guests. They replaced the old cabinetry with custom-built storage solutions that maximized space and added more functionality to the kitchen. The new island and countertops were made with durable and sustainable materials that would last a lifetime and require little maintenance. They also installed new recessed lighting fixtures that brightened up the kitchen and provided a warm and welcoming ambiance.

Next, the hosts turned their attention to the living room, which was dark and cramped. They removed the closed-in entryway and installed wide double doors to create a grand entrance that would lead guests into the open space. They also added a cozy fireplace and comfortable seating to make the living room a comfortable and inviting gathering place for family and friends.

One of the unique challenges of this project was creating a space that would be practical and safe for the couple as they aged. Jonathan and Drew installed grab bars and a zero-threshold walk-in shower in the bathroom, making it easier for the homeowners to enter and exit and reducing the risk of slips and falls. They also upgraded the fixtures, added a heated towel rack, and installed a skylight to bring in natural light and fresh air.

Finally, the hosts created a charming guest suite for the couple's grandkids when they come to visit. They renovated the bedroom, added extra storage, and installed smart technology that would allow the homeowners to monitor their grandchildren while they were staying in the room.

Throughout the entire process, the hosts worked collaboratively with the homeowners, carefully listening to their needs and preferences to create a space that reflected their new lifestyle. By the end of the episode, the couple was thrilled with their new "forever home" and couldn't wait to start making new memories with their loved ones.
