Roman Mysteries is a television show from FilmRise that was released between 2007 and 2008. This historical drama was created by Simon J. Ashford and Fiona Finlay, and is based on a series of children's books written by Caroline Lawrence. The show follows the adventures of Flavia Gemina (Francesca Isherwood) and her three friends, Jonathan (Eli Machover), Nubia (Rebekah Brookes-Murrell), and Lupus (Harry Stott), as they solve mysteries and unravel conspiracies in ancient Rome.

Flavia Gemina is a young girl from a wealthy family, who lost her wealthy and influential father in his home at Ostia, where he was killed. On the day of the murder, Flavia meets Jonathan, a young Jewish boy from Alexandria, and her life is changed forever. When Flavia's father is killed, she swears to bring his murderers to justice. Jonathan, who has impressive language and logical skills, Lupus, a mute beggar boy who has a talent for thievery, and Nubia, an African slave girl who escaped from the slavers, also join Flavia in her quest for justice.

Throughout the series, the four young friends put their skills and resourcefulness to the test as they solve complex puzzles and mysteries. From chasing down stolen animals to uncovering hidden conspiracies, the Roman Mysteries show is full of excitement, intrigue, and drama.

To navigate the complex world of ancient Rome, the group enlists the help of various mentors, including Flavia's uncle, Gaius Sempronius, and his friend, Pompey. As the story unfolds, they meet many historical figures such as Julius Caesar, Cicero, and Cleopatra. The show also includes depictions of real-life events such as the assassination of Julius Caesar and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Despite being a children's show, Roman Mysteries is full of nuanced and complex characters. Flavia is a strong and determined protagonist who is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. Jonathan is intelligent and funny, but also thoughtful and introspective. Nubia is brave and loyal, and Lupus's strength and resilience are inspiring.

One of the key strengths of this show is its attention to detail. The sets and costumes were meticulously designed to recreate ancient Rome, and historical accuracy was also a priority. This aspect of the show makes it a valuable educational resource for children, as they learn about Roman civilization in a fun and engaging way.

Overall, Roman Mysteries is an entertaining and educational show that both children and adults can enjoy. It is full of historical accuracy, intrigue, and drama, with memorable characters and engaging storylines. The show's popularity led to the production of a second season, and it has gained a devoted fan base over the years. If you are looking for a thrilling adventure set in ancient Rome, Roman Mysteries is a must-watch.
