In the small town of La Rochelle, Georgia, supernatural forces run rampant, and it is up to the Hastings family to protect the town from these malevolent spirits. The patriarch, Isaac Hastings, runs a funeral home that has been in the family for generations, but it doubles as a temple to the supernatural as the Hastings family's mission is to protect La Rochelle from forces that can't be explained by science.
In "Pilot," we are introduced to the Hastings family and their unique abilities. Isaac Hastings, played by Mario Van Peebles, seems to have the power of premonition and imparts his knowledge onto his son Calvin (Brad James) who has an uncanny ability to see through objects and detect death. Calvin is a former military man who returns home to La Rochelle after his brother Michael's death. He's grappling with the demons of his past and looking to reconnect with his estranged family.
Meanwhile, matriarch Bea Hastings (Robinne Lee) is a doctor who believes in the power of science. She has a hard time reconciling her faith and her scientific beliefs, but her strengths lie in her ability to save the living. Her daughter, Garvey (Tatiana Zappardino), is a tech-savvy teenager who is excited about the prospect of harnessing technology to combat the supernatural.
The Hastings family receives a call from Sheriff Maynard (Demetria McKinney) about a suspicious death in town. The victim is a young woman whose body was found in the middle of the woods, but the circumstances of her death don't add up. The family springs into action, using their unique abilities and their finely-tuned skills to investigate the crime.
As they delve deeper into the mystery, they start to uncover some unsettling truths about the supernatural forces at work in La Rochelle. The family discovers that the death in the woods might not be a random act, and that there might be something much more malicious and powerful at play.
This episode sets the stage for what promises to be a thrilling season. The showrunners expertly balance the supernatural elements with family drama and human emotions, creating a show that is both eerie and touching. The cast does an excellent job of bringing their characters to life, and the chemistry between the Hastings family members is palpable.
Overall, "Pilot" is a strong start to a show that has a lot of promise. The writers leave enough questions unanswered to hook the audience and keep them coming back for more. Viewers who love a good supernatural mystery will definitely find something to love in Superstition.
