Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, the deep-cover KGB spies posing as American citizens, continue their work for the Soviet Union in the second episode of The Americans' fifth season. Titled Pests, the episode delves into the cramped, claustrophobic world of the Jennings' spy tactics as they race to complete their missions while avoiding detection by the FBI and their unsuspecting neighbors.

The episode opens with Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Philip (Matthew Rhys) attempting to bug the home of a key CIA asset, only to be thwarted by a malfunctioning transmitter. The stakes are high, as the information they hope to gather could help prevent a potential war between the US and the Soviet Union. Meanwhile, their daughter, Paige (Holly Taylor), continues to grapple with the revelation that her parents are spies.

As the Jennings struggle to maintain their cover, they must also contend with the arrival of a new Soviet handler, Tuan (Ivan Mok), who is suspicious of their commitment to the cause. Tuan's aggressive tactics put the Jennings on edge, and his presence threatens to jeopardize their many years of successful spy work. The tension between Tuan and the Jennings is palpable, making for some of the most gripping scenes of the episode.

In addition to their espionage work, Elizabeth and Philip also face personal challenges in their marriage. Philip, struggling with the guilt of his actions as a spy, seeks solace in attending EST (Erhard Seminars Training), a popular self-help group of the era. Meanwhile, Elizabeth continues to carry out orders from the KGB that go against her moral compass, causing her to question her loyalty to the Soviet Union.

As always, The Americans is masterful in its use of tension and suspense, and Pests is no exception. The scenes in which the Jennings attempt to bug the CIA asset's home are particularly tense, with the malfunctioning transmitter adding an extra layer of anxiety. The cramped quarters of the Jennings' spy base only add to the claustrophobia of the situation, making it all the more suspenseful.

The performances on the show are, as always, outstanding. Keri Russell is particularly compelling as Elizabeth struggles with her loyalty to the KGB. Her inner conflict is palpable, and Russell does a fantastic job of conveying her character's emotions without overplaying them. Matthew Rhys is also strong as Philip confronts his guilt and seeks some kind of redemption. Holly Taylor continues to shine as Paige, providing a glimpse into the toll that her parents' spy work is taking on her.

Overall, Pests is an excellent episode that showcases everything that makes The Americans great. Its tense, suspenseful moments are expertly crafted, while the performances are consistently excellent. Fans of the show won't be disappointed by this latest installment, and newcomers will find it an engaging introduction to the series.
