In the first episode of The Keepers, "The Murder," we are introduced to the tragic story of Sister Cathy Cesnik. A beloved and respected teacher at Archbishop Keough High School in Baltimore, Maryland, Sister Cathy went missing in November 1969 and her body was found two months later in a remote woodland area. Despite the efforts of the local authorities, her killer was never caught and the case remained unsolved for decades.

Over the years, rumors and allegations about the circumstances surrounding Sister Cathy's death have circulated, but no concrete evidence has ever been produced. In "The Murder," we hear from a number of people who were close to Sister Cathy, including two former students who were deeply affected by her death. Jean Wehner, who was a teenager at the time of Sister Cathy's murder, recounts how the nun had warned her that the school's chaplain, Father Joseph Maskell, was sexually abusing students. Jean believes that Sister Cathy's attempts to expose Maskell may have been what ultimately led to her death.

Another former student, Teresa Lancaster, tells a similar story. She recalls how Maskell would take her out of class for "counseling sessions" that turned into sexual abuse, and how he threatened her with violence if she ever spoke out. Teresa believes that Sister Cathy knew what was happening and was trying to protect her students.

As we learn more about Sister Cathy's life and death, we also see how her murder impacted the community surrounding Archbishop Keough. For many, the case remains an open wound, and there is a sense that justice has never been served. As Jean puts it, "There's a lot of pain here. There's a lot of stuff that's been buried and not talked about."

Throughout the episode, we are shown archival footage and photographs of Sister Cathy and the high school where she taught. We also hear from journalists who have covered the case over the years and from retired police detectives who worked on the investigation. The Keepers manages to weave together these various perspectives to create a compelling and heartbreaking portrait of a woman whose life was cut short and whose memory is still shrouded in mystery.

Overall, "The Murder" sets the stage for what promises to be a gripping and emotional exploration of Sister Cathy's death and the larger issues of abuse and corruption within the Catholic Church. It is clear that this is a story that has affected countless lives over the years, and that there are many people who are still searching for answers and seeking closure. By giving voice to those who have been silenced for too long, The Keepers is an important and powerful work of true crime storytelling.
