The Pale Horse is a television series based on Agatha Christie's novel of the same name, originally published in 1961. The show premiered in 2020 and stars Rufus Sewell in the lead role. The story revolves around a murder mystery set in the UK during the 1960s. The main character, Mark Easterbrook (played by Sewell), is a shrewd and intelligent man with a sharp mind and a keen eye for detail. He becomes embroiled in a dangerous and complex game of murder when he stumbles across a list of names - names of people who have supposedly died.

Mark soon discovers that the people on the list were murdered, but the murders were made to look like natural deaths. He believes that there is a connection between the murders and a mysterious group of women who live in a town called Much Deeping - the witches of Much Deeping. Mark sets out to investigate the murders but soon finds himself in over his head as he uncovers a web of lies and deceit.

The Pale Horse is a dark and brooding drama that is heavily influenced by the vintage horror films of the 1960s. The show has a strong sense of atmosphere and is beautifully shot - the eerie landscapes of the English countryside are used to great effect. The show also features a haunting score that perfectly captures the foreboding mood of the story.

At the heart of the show is Rufus Sewell's performance as Mark Easterbrook. Sewell is an accomplished actor with a commanding presence, and he delivers a superb performance as the troubled protagonist. Mark is a complex character who is haunted by the death of his wife and is struggling to come to terms with his own mortality. Nevertheless, he is determined to uncover the truth behind the murders, no matter what the cost.

The supporting cast is also excellent. Kaya Scodelario plays Mark's partner-in-crime, Hermia, and puts in a strong and convincing performance. The ensemble cast features a range of talented actors, including Sean Pertwee, Bertie Carvel, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes. Each of the characters is well-drawn and unique, and the interplay between them is compelling.

The Pale Horse is a slow-burner of a show. The story is intricate and complex, and the pacing is deliberate. The show takes its time to build tension and atmosphere, but it rewards the viewer's patience in the end. The secrets and lies are gradually revealed, and the final reveal is both shocking and satisfying.

Overall, The Pale Horse is a strong and sophisticated mystery drama that should appeal to fans of Agatha Christie and vintage horror. Rufus Sewell's performance is a standout, and the show's production values are top-notch. The Pale Horse is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys a good murder mystery.

Mark is consumed with paranoia, fearful that his life is at risk and that the perpetrator is someone known to him. Mark feels his own death treading on his heels, breathing down his neck. To make matters worse, Detective Inspector Lejeune seems to be increasingly suspicious of him and Mark feels even more alone. He's determined to find a rational explanation because there has to be one - this is the 1960s not the Dark Ages. Past and present collide for Mark as his investigations uncover the ties between his first wife Delphine and the trio of 'witches' (Sheila Atim, Kathy Kiera Clarke, Rita Tushingham) at Much Deeping, putting his relationship with second wife Hermia under great strain. Terrified, Mark becomes hell-bent on uncovering the nature of the witches' powers and their work at The Pale Horse. With each passing day, each disquieting moment, each tormented, terrifying night, Osborne's beliefs seem less fantastical and more plausible. Mark starts to believe in the craft, in the dark arts, in the witches peculiar skills. If they are truly as powerful as they seem, can they save him from his nightmares, before whoever wants him dead catches up with him? How far will he go to save himself?
