Watch The Pilgrim's Progress: A Guided Tour

Christiana and her companions have reached the River of Death, but they do not all cross the river at the same time. In the final part of this series, Derek Thomas reflects on how we can look to these stories of the pilgrim life and in them find hope and wisdom to live well and to be ready when Our Lord calls us to His side.

As Christiana and her fellow pilgrims journey through the Delectable Mountains, Enchanted Ground, and Beulah Land, they continue to encounter both spiritual opponents and spiritual allies. In the eighteenth part of this series, Derek Thomas walks us alongside Christiana as she draws nearer to the city gates and closer to the end of her journey.

Though there are often points of similarity between the experiences and struggles of believers, each person engages certain spiritual realities differently. In the seventeenth part of this series, Derek Thomas observes what happened to Christiana and the boys in some of the same places that her husband had visited, taking note of John Bunyan's rich theology of spiritual warfare.

In the sixteenth part of this series, Derek Thomas shows that though we do not know what the road ahead of us may hold, God's pilgrims can be confident that He knows their needs.

As Christiana, Mercy, and the children follow the same route that Christian walked earlier, they encounter many of the same people and landmarks on their way to the Palace Beautiful. In the fifteenth part of this series, Derek Thomas explains that though no two Christians have identical spiritual journeys, there are often points of similarity in their experiences.

Some dangers in life are apparent, and others are not. As Christiana and her companions approached the wicket gate, they encountered unexpected opposition from the forces of darkness. In the fourteenth part of this series, Dr. Derek Thomas reminds us that in all ages, believers need to remain vigilant and sober-minded even when things seem to be going well.

After a follower of Jesus has departed from this life, God may continue to use his or her influence to change the lives of even those who were once hardened against the gospel. In the thirteenth part of this series, Derek Thomas turns our attention to the wife and children that Christian left behind when he began his pilgrimage to the Celestial City.

As Christian and Hopeful discover, the end of the journey brings with it a variety of emotions and experiences. In the twelfth part of this series, Derek Thomas shows that the anticipation of entering the Celestial City is something that all true pilgrims can share, as fear of death gives way to the joy of entering the King's presence.

After enduring numerous hardships and trials, Christian and Hopeful at last arrive in the Delectable Mountains, a place of safety and spiritual refreshment. In the eleventh part of this series, Derek Thomas tells us that though God's people are often called to walk difficult paths, God is faithful to supply moments of rest in order to strengthen and sustain His pilgrims.

As Christian journeys onward he travels alongside Hopeful, a new fellow pilgrim. In the tenth part of this series, Derek Thomas tells us about one of the most dark and profound scenes in Pilgrim's Progress as the travelers decide to depart from the King's highway for an "easier path" which leads to their imprisonment in Doubting Castle.

Not all dangers are as obvious as the attacks of the foul Apollyon. In the ninth part of this series, Derek Thomas explains that, though Vanity Fair may not be known for dark shadows or vicious beasts, its seductive temptations will make it one of the most perilous places that Christian will visit.

Christian leaves the Valley of Humiliation only to enter an even darker and more foreboding place, making him particularly vulnerable to temptation, discouragement, and spiritual desolation. In the eighth part of this series, Derek Thomas reminds us that God will not desert his people, but that His faithfulness is often revealed most poignantly in the midst of our doubt and hardship.
