The Tick is a superhero comedy television series that premiered its first season in 2016. In the first episode titled "The Tick," the viewers are introduced to the titular character, who is a blue-clad, bulletproof superhero with superhuman strength and a superhuman sense of smell. The Tick has escaped from an insane asylum where he was being treated for delusions of grandeur and is now roaming the streets of the City, determined to save it from all the evils that threaten it.
The episode begins with the Tick (Peter Serafinowicz) arriving in the City and immediately encountering the mild-mannered accountant Arthur Everest (Griffin Newman). Arthur is fascinated by superheroes and has spent most of his life trying to uncover the Shadowy Figure, the notorious supervillain who killed his father when he was a child. However, his obsession has alienated him from his family and friends, and he now works for a branch of the City government that investigates insurance claims related to superhero damage.
Arthur is initially wary of the Tick, but the superhero's boundless enthusiasm and charismatic personality soon win him over. The Tick believes that Arthur has a destiny to be a hero, and he takes it upon himself to train him in the ways of crime-fighting. Meanwhile, in the City's criminal underworld, the villainous Ramses IV (Michael Cerveris) is planning to steal a powerful weapon from a secret military installation, with the help of his henchwoman Miss Lint (Yara Martinez).
As the Tick and Arthur pursue their own crime-fighting adventures, they find themselves drawn into Ramses IV's scheme. Along the way, they encounter a colorful cast of characters, including the Tick's former sidekick, Batmanuel (Nestor Carbonell), who is now a suave ladies' man; and Dot (Valorie Curry), Arthur's sister, who is skeptical of her brother's superhero aspirations but supportive of his desire to uncover the Shadowy Figure.
While the Tick and Arthur bumble their way through their first superhero mission, they soon discover that Ramses IV and Miss Lint are not the only threats to the City. There are also rumors of a secret society of supervillains, and the Shadowy Figure looms over Arthur's life like a malevolent specter. Although the Tick is convinced that he and Arthur can save the City from any danger, their paths are fraught with danger, uncertainty, and the occasional fart joke.
"The Tick" is a fun, irreverent take on the superhero genre that is both an homage and a parody. The show's colorful characters, zany humor, and fast-paced action make it a must-watch for fans of comics and comedy alike. The Tick is a timeless character that has been around since the 1980s, and this iteration of the character offers a fresh, modern perspective on his adventures. Although the show was canceled after two seasons, it has developed a dedicated cult following and remains a beloved entry in the superhero television canon.
