As the second season of The Umbrella Academy begins, we find the Hargreeves siblings scattered throughout time as a result of their failed attempt to stop the apocalypse. Allison is living in 1960s Texas with her husband and daughter, Klaus has started a cult in the 1960s, Diego has been institutionalized in the same time period, Luther is working as a boxer in the 1960s, Vanya is also in the 1960s but has lost her memory, and Five has landed in Dallas a few weeks before President Kennedy's assassination in 1963.

Five quickly realizes that he needs to reunite his family in order to avert another apocalypse, but the time-traveling siblings are not easy to track down. Diego's institutionalization complicates matters, as does his own stubbornness and determination to save Kennedy from assassination. Allison, meanwhile, has gotten involved in the civil rights movement and has her hands full with helping her husband's brother, Raymond, who is a member of the movement (and is played by Yusuf Gatewood, who is one of the new cast members this season).

Despite these obstacles, Five is determined to bring the family back together. He recruits Luther, who is surprised to see his brother after years of separation. Together they track down Klaus, who is living a hedonistic lifestyle. Upon finding him, they also discover a new set of powers Klaus has acquired due to his cult leadership.

In the midst of their reunion, the Hargreeves siblings begin to realize that they need to be careful while navigating through the past. They must change history only in ways that are beneficial while avoiding the Butterfly Effect whereby a small action could cause a huge ripple that could destroy the future.

As the episode progresses, we get glimpses of how each sibling has adapted to their new environment. We see Allison fighting for civil rights in a segregated 60s South, Vanya working as a nanny and trying to regain her memories, and Diego struggling to get out of his institution in order to save the president. Each sibling's storyline feels grounded in the past even as they explore the implications of time travel.

As the episode comes to a close, we are left with a sense of both urgency and uncertainty. The Hargreeves siblings are back together, but their mission is complex and fraught with danger. As they work to prevent the apocalypse yet again, they must contend with the very real possibility that they may be forever trapped in the past. Right Back Where We Started has set the stage for an exciting journey through time and space for The Umbrella Academy's second season.
