There She Goes Season 1 Episode 2 - Bubble Chess

In episode 2 of There She Goes, the show picks up where the first episode left off as we continue to follow the lives of a family and their daughter who has a rare genetic disorder. This particular episode is titled "Bubble Chess," and it's sure to tug at the heartstrings of anyone watching.

The episode starts with Simon (David Tennant) and Emily (Jessica Hynes) getting their daughter Rosie (Miley Locke) ready for her day at school. Emily is worried about Rosie's teacher as she thinks that she is dismissive and doesn't understand Rosie's condition. Simon tries his best to reassure her, but the tension is palpable.

Meanwhile, we also see flashbacks to when Rosie was younger and the challenges that the family had to face while raising her. The flashbacks reveal that Rosie was not always as nonverbal as she is now, and it's clear that her condition has gotten worse over time.

At school, Rosie struggles to fit in as most of the other children do not understand her and often make fun of her. We get to see how her caregivers are patient with her and try to make her feel included, but the overhead glimpses of the staffs harboring inability to cope with Rosie's condition are clear.

Back at home, Simon is trying to bond with his son Ben (Edan Hayhurst), who is starting to realize that his sister's condition makes his life different from other children. This plotline is carefully crafted as we also see Simon recalling snippets of his childhood, where his father points out how Simon's sister Chrissie's condition makes her different, much like Rosie's. The similarities are striking, and the impact of Simon being on both ends of the situation as a son and as a father of children with similar conditions make it poignant and emotional.

Simon takes Ben to play Bubble Chess, a game where you can only move your pieces when they are inside the bubble. It's a clear metaphor with how their lives are limited as they have to be confined in order to achieve the things they want. The emotional weight of this scene is further fueled when Simon puts his son at ease that it is okay to feel how he does, and that, simply put, sometimes life can just be unfair.

Emily confronts Rosie's teacher, who is dismissive and unhelpful when confronted with Rosie's difficult behavior. Emily, who is Simon's rock, holds her ground firmly towards the teacher's suggestions, which is not only insensitive but also neglectful. Emily's frustration and concern are palpable, and her personality changes in this scene make it more significant.

Throughout the episode, we get snippets of the family's life when Rosie was a baby, flashing back to the time when the siblings were born; there was a running thematic metaphor of the family being disrupted, but it was noticeable that the ones who wanted it to stay stable were always Simon and Emily.

The episode ends with Rosie's new caregiver, Mia (Yasmine Akram), taking her out on an excursion to a fair. It's a heart-warming scene that is in stark contrast with the tension of the earlier parts of the episode. Mia and Rosie seem to have a natural connection that may work as therapy. The episode ends with Rosie's face painted and happily smiling, much to the relief of the audience who are allowed to catch a break from the emotionally charged previous scene.

Overall, the second episode of There She Goes is another poignant, emotionally resonant and yet funny episode that examines the challenges of living with a rare genetic disorder. The show sets the scene decently and the audience can appreciate the careful construction of the characters and their backstory. The title "Bubble Chess" is impactful and significant, and while the episode is emotionally heavy, the writers have had the sense to add somewhat lighter moments to the mix. It's a beautifully done episode, setting up a promising series that explores themes of family, love, loss, and acceptance.
