Ep 1. Prison & Prep School

As the new season of This is Life with Lisa Ling begins, we follow Lisa as she journeys to two completely contrasting locations- a prison and a prep school- to investigate how the lives of the individuals confined to these respective institutions are shaped by their environment.

In the first half of the episode, Lisa visits a correctional facility in Virginia to get a closer look at the country's criminal justice system and the lives of the incarcerated. She meets with a group of inmates who are part of a program that trains dogs to become service animals for disabled veterans, offering hope and a sense of purpose to these men who are serving long sentences. Lisa also interviews staff members who discuss the challenges facing the system and their efforts to reform it. Here, she explores how the pursuit of academic excellence and the pressure to succeed shape the lives of high-achieving students preparing for a future in some of the most competitive college institutions. Lisa interviews students from different backgrounds and socio-economic classes and discovers the challenges and pitfalls of navigating the social hierarchy of the school. She also interviews teachers and administrators who discuss what it takes to maintain the school's high standards of academic rigor and the struggles that come with upholding an institution known for its reputation of privilege.

The juxtaposition of these two extremes of confinement in one episode presents a thought-provoking contrast to the viewer. It encourages them to question what our society values and to reflect on the factors that shape an individual's life from the outset, sometimes leaving them with limited options. Overall, the episode delves into the realities of two distinct environments and provides a platform for candid discussions about the potential for change and evolution in two very different systems.
