Of Lice and Men is the fifth episode from the debut season of Those Who Can't, a comedy series about a group of dysfunctional high school teachers at Smoot High. The episode revolves around a lice outbreak in the school, and puts the teachers in an unfortunate position as they try to tackle the issue without making it worse.
The episode starts off with the school’s nurse informing Principal Quinn (played by Loren Mendel) that there was a student found with lice. The school is subsequently placed on red alert as the faculty and students are informed that they need to be checked for lice. While the students wait in long lines to get checked, a series of hilariously unfortunate events unravel in the background of the faculty room.
We see an exchange between Coach Fairbell (played by Andrew Orvedahl) and a student, who refuses to get his head checked by the coach, after he insinuates that the student has lice. Meanwhile, English teacher Loren Payton (played by Adam Cayton-Holland) is preoccupied with his own lice predicament, and attempts to get rid of them by following an online video guide. And in a separate scene, we see history teacher Abbey Logan (played by Maria Thayer) dealing with a telling situation of her own as she discovers she’s stuck wearing "Lice-Be-Gone" and develops a strong reaction to the chemical that’s in it.
As the outbreak continues to escalate, Principal Quinn insists that the school dress code is updated with a new dress code policy that bans hats and hoodies, which are considered to be prime breeding grounds for lice. This further complicates the situation as it offends the students and creates a whole new set of problems for the faculty.
As the day wears on, the teachers try to come up with new solutions to try and contain the lice outbreak. Coach Fairbell thinks that they can solve the problem with a “lice check and destroy” mission. He and the other teachers opt to shave off the hair of students who are found to have lice, but this only adds to the chaos. Loren Payton tries to help a student who’s too embarrassed to get his head checked by offering to check his head in private, only to discover that the teacher’s lounge is already occupied by other teachers.
Meanwhile, the tension between the teachers only increases as they scramble to find new ways to resolve the lice epidemic. When Coach Fairbell hatches a new plan to shower the students with a chemical to get rid of the lice, the rest of the faculty immediately shoots him down, claiming that it's a bad idea. The situation becomes increasingly complicated, and the teachers find themselves grappling with personal vendettas against each other on top of the looming lice problem.
