Tracey Ullman's State of the Union Season 3 Episode 7

Ep 7. Season 3, Episode 7

  • March 8, 2010

Tracey Ullman's State of the Union is a political satire show, in which the talented Tracey Ullman impersonates various famous and political figures. The show holds up a mirror to the craziness of contemporary politics and popular culture, and skews them through Ullman's comedic lens.

Season 3, Episode 7 is another hilarious installment of the show, featuring a range of appearances and sketches that will have viewers chuckling away (not to mention, possibly questioning the state of the world today!). The episode is centered around the theme of power, and various characters from all over the political spectrum are skewered and satirized in typically biting Ullman style.

In one sketch, Ullman impersonates Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter and controversial advisor. In this sketch, Ivanka is shown as being obsessed with securing a travel ban on all Muslims, and is seen strategizing endlessly with her father to try and make it happen. Meanwhile, in another sketch, Ullman plays Nancy Pelosi, the Democrats' leader in the House of Representatives, and shows Pelosi as being completely out of touch with the everyday Americans she is trying to win over.

A particularly funny sketch features Ullman impersonating a fake news anchor who is constantly interrupted by live crosses from the White House. The anchor starts off calm and collected, but as the night goes on - and the live crosses become more and more frenzied - he starts to crack under the pressure. It's a hilarious spoof of the current media landscape, and the way in which news is constantly breaking, no matter what time of day it is.

Elsewhere in the episode, Ullman appears as Theresa May, the beleaguered British Prime Minister, who is floundering under the weight of Brexit negotiations. In this sketch, May is shown as being so anxious and desperate to impress her European counterparts that she resorts to dancing a jig on the conference table. It's a typically witty and irreverent take on a serious political figure.

And finally, no episode of Tracey Ullman's State of the Union would be complete without an appearance from America's most famous power couple, Donald and Melania Trump. In this sketch, Ullman plays Melania as a woman who is desperate to escape her husband's clutches - but who is constantly foiled by his confusing and erratic behavior. Donald, meanwhile, is as egotistical and ridiculous as ever, in a hilarious send-up of his presidency.

Overall, Season 3, Episode 7 of Tracey Ullman's State of the Union is a riotous and incisive look at the world of politics and power today. With Ullman's signature wit and expert impersonations, it's a must-watch for anyone who wants a laugh - and a glimpse into how politics both in the US and abroad is being reshaped in unusual and unexpected ways.
