Set during the American Revolutionary War, TURN is a historical drama series that focuses on the events surrounding the Culper Spy Ring, a group of American spies who operated under the command of General George Washington. The first episode of the series, entitled "Pilot," introduces us to many of the main characters and sets the stage for the events to come.

The episode opens in the summer of 1776, just weeks after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. British forces have taken control of New York City, and General Washington is looking for ways to turn the tide of the war. Enter Abe Woodhull, a farmer and former soldier who is struggling to make ends meet. Abe is approached by a childhood friend, Ben Tallmadge, who has recently been appointed to General Washington's elite Light Dragoons. Ben enlists Abe to use his trade connections to supply the Continental Army with much-needed goods and resources.

Meanwhile, we meet Major John Andre, a British intelligence officer who has been tasked with finding and capturing American spies. His attention is drawn to the town of Setauket, on Long Island, where he believes there is a spy network operating. In Setauket, we also meet Abe's childhood friend Anna Strong, who owns a tavern and is secretly involved in the spy ring. Anna and Abe share a complicated history, as they were once in love but are now estranged.

As the episode progresses, we see Abe attempting to navigate his new role as a spy for the American cause. He must keep his activities hidden from his father, Judge Richard Woodhull, who is loyal to the British Crown. Abe is also struggling with the morality of his choices and the danger they put himself and his family in. This inner conflict is heightened when he receives news that his father has been arrested on suspicion of supplying the Continental Army.

Meanwhile, Anna and Ben are working to get a message to General Washington, warning him of an impending ambush by British forces. They need Abe's help to get the message past the British checkpoint into New York City. The tension builds as they try to execute their plan without getting caught.

The episode concludes with a dramatic scene in which Judge Woodhull is brought before Major Andre for questioning. Abe, who has been ordered by his father to stay out of politics, can no longer sit idly by. He makes the decision to officially join the spy ring and work to clear his father's name.

Overall, the pilot episode of TURN is a fast-paced and exciting introduction to the series. We are introduced to complex characters with competing loyalties and motivations. The historical backdrop provides an engaging setting for the conflicts and intrigue that are sure to come. The episode ends on a satisfying cliffhanger that will leave viewers eager to see where the story goes next.
