In Turn season 2 episode 1, titled "Thoughts of a Free Man," we are introduced to the aftermath of the events that took place in the season one finale. The episode starts with a prologue that highlights the recent history of the American Revolution, which sets the tone for what’s to come.

The episode then picks up right where season one left off. Abe Woodhull is stuck in New York City, trying desperately to come up with a plan to get himself out of the city and back to Setauket. Meanwhile, his wife, Mary, is still struggling with the loss of their child and trying to find a way to get Abe out of the city as well. Her longing for her husband is palpable as she paces back and forth frantically in her room, trying to come up with a plan.

As the episode progresses, we are introduced to new characters who are bound to play a critical role in this season’s plot. Caleb Brewster, one of the main characters, is seen helping General Charles Lee, a new character, escape from the British custody. The escape involves an exciting chase, gunfights, and a risky attempt to cross the East River.

Meanwhile, Ben Tallmadge, who is still injured from the gunshot wound he received in the last season, is recovering in a safe house with the help of his love interest, Peggy Shippen. However, his troubles are not over yet, as he needs to get well soon to carry out missions for George Washington. Despite his injuries, he seems more driven than ever to help in any way he can.

A significant portion of the episode features British Major Hewlett in his newly appointed role as the governor of Setauket. He is trying to deal with the fallout of the battle that took place in town at the end of season one, and he is also trying to keep the townspeople and British officers happy at the same time. However, he faces several challenges, including a public outcry and protests, as well as issues within the ranks of his officers.

One of the highlights of this episode is the character development of Judge Richard Woodhull. In this episode, he shows a softer side to his character, which is quite different from the stern and stoic judge we saw in the previous season. He is depicted as a man who is genuinely concerned about his son’s welfare and wants him to return home as soon as possible. His interactions with his daughter-in-law, Mary, are touching and emotional, as he shares some family history and advises her on how to deal with her grief.

Overall, "Thoughts of a Free Man" is an excellent season premiere that sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting season. The episode is engaging, emotionally charged, and full of action. It introduces new characters while still maintaining a strong focus on the main characters from the previous season. While there are still many questions left unanswered, this season premiere leaves the viewers with a sense of anticipation, and it's sure to keep them coming back for more.
