In the sixth episode of Unmasking A Killer's first season, entitled Closing in on the Golden State Killer, Part 1, the investigation into one of the most prolific and elusive serial criminals in history enters a new phase. The Golden State Killer, also known as the East Area Rapist and the Original Night Stalker, has evaded authorities for decades, but new technologies and a renewed sense of determination on the part of law enforcement have brought investigators closer than ever to uncovering his identity.

The episode begins with a recap of the Golden State Killer's crimes, which spanned over a decade and included at least 12 murders, 50 rapes, and over 100 burglaries throughout California. The killer's methods were brutal and calculated, and he seemed to delight in taunting his victims and the police. Despite an intensive investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies, the killer was never apprehended and his case remained unsolved for years.

However, in recent years, new forensic technologies have allowed investigators to reexamine old evidence and gain new insights into the killer's methods. One breakthrough came in 2016, when investigators were able to link the Golden State Killer's DNA to several of the crimes he committed. This led to renewed interest in the case and a new wave of investigative efforts to finally unmask the killer.

The episode then introduces the various investigators involved in the case, including Michelle McNamara, a writer and amateur sleuth who dedicated much of her life to researching the Golden State Killer and writing a book about his crimes. Sadly, McNamara passed away before the book's release, but her work has continued to inspire and guide investigators as they close in on the killer.

The episode also highlights the role of forensic genealogy in the investigation. This technology, which uses DNA samples from crime scenes to build a family tree and narrow down potential suspects, has been instrumental in several recent high-profile cold cases. Investigators in the Golden State Killer case have been working with experts in this field to try and find a match for the killer's DNA.

Despite these advancements, however, the investigation into the Golden State Killer remains incredibly complex and challenging. The killer's crimes were committed over a wide geographic area and spanned several years, making it difficult to piece together a complete picture of his movements and methods. Furthermore, the killer's ability to evade authorities for so long suggests that he was highly intelligent and cunning, able to cover his tracks and avoid detection.

Nevertheless, investigators remain determined to solve the case and bring the Golden State Killer to justice. With new technologies and fresh leads, they are closing in on the killer, piece by piece. In Part 1 of this two-part episode, viewers will see just how close investigators are getting to finally solving this decades-old mystery.
