In the first episode of Yukon Gold season 5, titled "Strike When the Iron Is Hot," viewers are taken back to one of the most remote areas in Canada where brave gold miners risk their lives every day in search of riches. The episode starts by introducing the main cast of miners, who are determined to make it big in this treacherous profession.

The first miner we meet is Karl Knutson, who is determined to find the motherlode that has eluded him for years. He has partnered with Ken Foy, and together they are targeting a promising gold-rich area that they had discovered in the previous season. They plan on drilling up to 50 feet deep to find the rich veins of gold that they believe are present in the area. After setting up the necessary equipment, they start drilling and are surprised to discover that their estimates were correct. They come across a large vein of gold, giving them hope that they might finally find the big strike they have been looking for.

Next, we meet Chris St. Jean and his crew, who are racing against time to finish their work before the deep freeze sets in and the ground becomes too frozen to continue. They are using a massive excavator to dig through tough dirt and boulders, hoping to reach a promising gold-rich area they had discovered earlier. However, when the excavator breaks down, they are forced to pause their efforts and wait for a mechanic to come in from town. This delay means they have to work extra-hard later to catch up on lost time, which puts their safety at risk. This added pressure adds to the suspense of whether they will meet their deadline and if their efforts will even pay off.

Thirdly, we have Big Al McGregor, who has been a gold miner in the Yukon for over 30 years. He has located a new promising area full of gold, but it is located 50 miles from his camp. He has to use his skills and experience to build a safe 50-mile long trail to transport his gear and equipment to the new site. The difficult terrain and heavy loads make this an emotionally and physically challenging task but nothing is getting in Big Al's way when it comes to the ultimate goal of striking gold.

Also, we see Nika Guilbault and her family, who are attempting to juggle the responsibilities of mining, family, and business. Nika and her partner, Chris, have found a new gold-rich area but they have difficulty securing the lease and need to work extra hard to get the required permits. Meanwhile, back at camp, Nika's young daughter is not feeling well, and they have to juggle family duties too. This challenges their ability to meet their goals and raises questions about what they are willing to do to meet their mining objectives.

Lastly, we meet Cam Johnson, whose family has been in the gold mining business for generations. He is using his experience and know-how to dredge an area that has previously been abandoned when the gold ran out. He is using some high-tech equipment, including a mini helicopter and digital mapping software, to ensure he is at the right spot for the gold. However, the terrain is tough, and unforeseen obstacles repeatedly appear, leading him to question whether the gold is worth the risk.

In summary, the opening episode of Yukon Gold season five, "Strike When the Iron Is Hot," features some of the most daring and skilled gold miners in the remote, harsh Yukon territory. Their efforts to strike it big in the gold mining industry are set against the backdrop of physical challenges, family responsibilities and failing equipment. The show is full of suspense, drama, and high stakes as miners race against time and weather to make their fortunes.
