In the movie Formosa Betrayed, James Van Der Beek portrays FBI agent Jake Kelly who is sent to Taiwan to investigate the murder of an American citizen. In his search for the killer, Jake soon finds himself involved in a web of political intrigue and conspiracy as he uncovers a sinister plan to suppress the Taiwanese independence movement and maintain the status quo of "one China."

As Jake delves deeper into the case, he begins to realize the extent of the corruption and brutality of the Taiwanese government as they use every means necessary to silence dissenting voices and prevent any opposition to their rule. Along the way, Jake seeks the help of Chen Chieh-ju, a Taiwanese activist played by Will Tiao, who is fighting for the democratic rights of his people.

Despite facing threats and danger at every turn, Jake courageously moves forward with his investigation, even as he becomes more and more disillusioned with the American government's complicity in supporting the oppressive regime. His efforts eventually put him on a collision course with the powerful forces behind the suppression of Taiwanese democracy, culminating in a shocking and brutal climax that shakes the island nation to its core.

Throughout the movie, Van Der Beek's portrayal of Jake Kelly is both intense and nuanced, portraying a man who is both driven by justice and deeply affected by the events he witnesses. Wendy Crewson and John Heard also deliver strong performances as key players in the government and military, respectively, who are willing to do whatever it takes to maintain the status quo. Will Tiao shines in his role as an activist who puts his own life on the line to fight for what he believes in.

Directed by Adam Kane and written by Will Tiao, this political thriller is a thought-provoking exploration of the struggle for democracy and freedom in Taiwan. Its themes are both timely and timeless, with relevance for audiences not just in Taiwan but around the world. With strong storytelling, excellent acting, and a gripping plot, Formosa Betrayed is a must-see for anyone interested in political dramas and international intrigue.

Formosa Betrayed is a 2009 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 43 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.1 and a MetaScore of 52.
