It's 1957, and young Mike Shea seems to be stuck in a predicament. Living in a small Pennsylvania town he has always dreamed of moving to California and today he is asking his girlfriend to go with him. That is when his girlfriend informs him that someone else has asked her to marry him and she said yes. Now it's just Mike and his trusty dog on the road to California.
Mike is adjusting well to his new found freedom and life is looking good again, until he runs across a car accident. A family has driven into the river and now they are all drowning. He manages to save the whole family, but after the very last person is brought up, he drowns. Once in heaven he discovers that human emotions still exist. In fact, he meets a beautiful soul by the name of Annie; they fall in love and even get married.
Their marriage is cut short because Annie has never earned her wings and in order to get them she must be sent to Earth. Mike learns that as Annie is reincarnated, her subconscious mind will carry a little bit of her experiences in heaven. Mike is bound and determined to be with his wife and begs the man in charge, Emmett Humbird, to send him back to Earth.
Emmett reluctantly agrees, but under the stipulation that they will not remember each other in human form. Mike is then sent to the same country as Annie but he only has thirty years to find her. If not, each one will be destined to live an unhappy existence and marry other people for their time on Earth.
