In the 1992 action-thriller "Split Second," Rutger Hauer plays police detective Harley Stone, who is on the hunt for a serial killer in a dystopian London in the very near future. The killer has been dubbed the "Rain Killer" due to his habit of striking during heavy rainfall, and he has already claimed several victims. But as Stone and his partner, Dick Durkin (Alastair Duncan), continue their investigation, they begin to realize that this is no ordinary killer.

Stone is haunted by a personal tragedy - the death of his partner at the hands of the Rain Killer - and he is determined to stop the murderer at any cost. But the killer seems to be always one step ahead, and the clues they uncover lead them to a shocking conclusion. The killer is not human.

As Stone delves deeper into the case, he discovers that the Rain Killer is a genetically-engineered creature, created by a scientist named Dr. Paulsen (Alun Armstrong) who was conducting dangerous experiments in his lab. Paulsen's experiments resulted in the creation of a monster who can only survive by feeding on human hearts. The creature is able to shape-shift and is virtually indestructible, making it an incredibly formidable foe for Stone and his team.

In the midst of all this chaos, Stone also has to contend with the arrival of Michelle McLaine (Kim Cattrall), a journalist who is determined to get her own scoop on the story. Stone is initially distrustful of McLaine, but as they work together to uncover the truth, a bond develops between them.

As the climactic showdown between Stone and the Rain Killer approaches, it becomes clear that the only way to stop the creature is to destroy its heart - which is easier said than done, given that it can now shape-shift into any form it wishes. Stone must use all his skills and instincts to outsmart the creature and put an end to its reign of terror.

"Split Second" is a tense, thrilling ride with a great cast and a unique premise. The vision of a futuristic London is vividly realized, with its dark, damp streets and pervasive sense of danger. Hauer is excellent as the haunted Stone, a man consumed by his need for revenge, while Cattrall brings a smart, quick-witted edge to McLaine. Duncan's Durkin provides solid support as Stone's level-headed partner, and Armstrong is suitably creepy as the mad scientist behind the creature.

The film's special effects are impressive, particularly considering its age, and the Rain Killer's multiple transformations are suitably eerie. The action scenes are well-staged and thrilling, and the film's pacing never feels lagging or slow. Director Tony Maylam keeps the tension high throughout the film's 90-minute runtime, delivering a satisfying, action-packed conclusion that is sure to please fans of the genre.

Overall, "Split Second" is a solid entry in the sci-fi/action canon, boasting strong performances, impressive effects, and a memorable premise that sets it apart from other films of its era. If you're looking for a high-octane ride with plenty of thrills and chills, this one is definitely worth a watch.

Split Second is a 1992 action movie with a runtime of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.0 and a MetaScore of 26.
