The film Benchwarmers is about three guys who stood up to bullies in the behalf of the athletically-challenged kids out there. Clark, Gus and Richie are branded by their peers as geeks. As a result, they have been taunted and bullied all their lives by the people who have excellent athletic abilities with bad attitudes. Though the three friends loves to play baseball, their baseball buddies have been treating them like losers ever since they started to set foot on the diamond field.
One day, the three guys went to the local park to play a little baseball. However, a bunch of bully kids who were practicing for an upcoming tryout tried to heckle them out of the field. Gus, Clark and Richie then challenged the nine kids to a baseball game, three versus nine. Surprisingly, it is their turn to humiliate the athletic bullies this time.
Mel was impressed with the guy's performance. Mel was also a nerd when he was young and was bullied too. He grew up to be a very rich man and has a son who is also athletically-challenged. Mel was inspired by the trio's game that he wants to setup a tournament between the three guys versus the best youth teams all over the state.
The three accepted the offer and started beating all the best youth teams in their game. In the process, they became the heroes to the clumsy, bullied and awkward everywhere. However, in the final game of the movie, the trio did not play. They let their teammates of awkward, clumsy and bullied children play the game for them. The three gave the kids a chance to compete.
By the bottom of the 6th, the Benchwarmers team was losing with a score of 42-0. However, the opponent's team realized the true meaning of baseball, and it was to have fun. Because of that, the pitcher threw a "meatball" for Nelson, a member of the Benchwarmers. Nelson hit a home run. The Benchwarmers storm the field celebrating because they were not shut out.
