Dr. Peter Proud (Micheal Sarrazin) is a college professor who is having a recurring nightmare. He sees himself swimming in a lake and witnesses a woman in a row boat. She is beating a man with an oar while he begs for mercy. He calls her Marcia, begging her not to kill him. He sees the man struggling for his life and slowly sinks into the dark water. Peterís dreams began to interfere with his mind. Frustrated and concerned, he seeks help at a sleep clinic, but it does not help. Peter's dreams start turning into visions of places he has never been. While watching television one night, he sees the church on a documentary. It is the same church that he keeps seeing in his visions. In his dreams and visions, Massachusetts is the place where everything is unfolding. Peter decides to drive to Massachusetts to see if any of it strikes a chord with him. Nothing seems familiar until he reaches the town of Springfield. Peter feels as if he has come home in Springfield. He remember the bridge, the church the Arch and places he used to go in his nightmares and visions. Peter meets Marcia (Margot Kidder) at the Country Club and realizes she is the mystery woman of his nightmare at the Country Club. He befriends her and her daughter Ann (Jennifer OíNeil). Marcia is suspicious of Peter. To make matters worse, Peter and Ann are falling in love. Marcia suspects that Peter is the reincarnation of her dead husband. This seals Peterís fate and Marcia know what she must do. She killed her husband the first time and now she must do it again. Marcia lures Peter to the lake where so many years ago her husband met his death. She kills Peter as she had killed her husband years ago.
