Bret's past comes back to haunt him in Flight of the Conchords season 2 episode 3, titled "The Tough Brets." The episode starts with the duo trying to book a gig. They stumble upon a rough looking group of men, who call themselves "The Tough Brets." Jemaine suggests that they change their band name to avoid confusion, but Bret is hesitant.
Soon enough, we learn the reason behind Bret's reluctance. He reveals that he was actually a member of The Tough Brets back in his hometown in New Zealand. His former gang members are not happy with his decision to leave and pursue music, and they come looking for him in New York.
Bret is forced to confront his past, and Jemaine tries to help him out. The two go on a series of misadventures, trying to track down Bret's former gang members and convince them to let him go.
Along the way, we're treated to some hilarious moments involving Bret's former life as a "tough guy." We see him reluctantly take part in a violent game of rugby, and we learn that his tough exterior was all a façade - he was actually a sensitive artist at heart.
Despite the comedic moments, the episode also tackles some serious themes. We see how difficult it can be to break away from a toxic environment, and how hard it is to start over in a new place. We also see how important it is to have a supportive friend by your side.
Overall, "The Tough Brets" is a standout episode of Flight of the Conchords that combines humor with heart. It's a must-watch for fans of the series.
