Ep 8. Late in Life Drug Use

In Portlandia season 4 episode 8, entitled "Late in Life Drug Use," viewers are greeted to an ever-so quirky tale about two couples who decide to experiment with drugs later on in their lives. Throughout the episode, viewers are treated to various drug-induced sequences that highlight the absurdity of being on drugs in middle age, including one where Lance, resplendent in a leather jacket and a ponytail, inspires his friends with his newfound love for the Grateful Dead. Another scene shows the quartet sitting cross-legged on the floor while meditating, only to be interrupted by a curious passerby.

The episode features a slew of well-known actors who make side appearances, including Kirsten Dunst, who plays a pharmacist trying to explain to Lance and Lisa the side effects of some of the drugs they are considering. Kumail Nanjiani is a drug dealer who tries to recommend a mild drug to Nina and Derek, but ends up spending more time getting them to help him with his financial problems. Meanwhile, Steve Buscemi has a delightful cameo as a counsellor who helps Lance and Lisa prepare for their drug experiences.

In typical Portlandia fashion, the episode features lots of wry humour and a self-awareness about the ridiculousness of the situation. But the show also touches on real issues, such as the fear of getting older and losing excitement in life, and the temptation to find new sources of excitement at any cost.

As always, the show's production values are top-notch, with delightful camera work, colourful sets, and a rich soundtrack featuring a range of musical styles and genres. The episode's highlight is undoubtedly the "Going There" dance scene, featuring an energetic performance by Lisa and a hilariously uncoordinated one by Lance.

Overall, "Late in Life Drug Use" is a fun and thought-provoking episode that explores the quirks of getting older and trying to maintain a sense of adventure. It's entertaining, funny, and will undoubtedly have viewers itching to try out some new drugs of their own (even if only in their imaginations).
