Tessa has been looking forward to spending the winter holidays with her mother, however, the plans get derailed when Dallas invites them to spend Christmas with her family in the Hamptons. Tessa is unhappy with the invitation, not wanting to leave her beloved suburbs, but George insists they take up the offer as it may be a great opportunity to unwind from their suburban life.

The entire family gathers at Dallas' family home and Tessa is immediately shocked by the luxurious lifestyle she finds there. As she acclimates to the opulent surroundings, she becomes increasingly aware of the differences between her and Dallas' affluent family. On top of that, Tessa has a hard time adapting to their customs, including their yearly Christmas tradition, the Decemberfold.

While getting to know her newfound relatives, Tessa discovers their traditions, secrets and the true reason behind Dallas’ split from her husband. Meanwhile, George tries his hardest to avoid working throughout the holiday. He gets a little too comfortable around his new surroundings and begins getting carried away with the luxuries of the Hamptons.

As the festivities ensue, George's past addictions begin creeping back, and he seeks to avoid getting sucked into them. Dallas' mother puts a plan in motion to reunite Dallas and her ex-husband, which puts Dallas in a tough spot. George also finds himself being put in a tricky situation when he sees something that makes him second-guess Dallas and her family's true intentions.

Tessa begins to bond with her maternal grandmother, but gets slightly uncomfortable when she learns of her grandmother's bias against the suburbs. She also develops an interest in Dallas' charismatic cousin, Venice. Tessa discovers that behind the wealth and glamour of this reality, there is a different kind of hardship as she uncovers some dark secrets about her friend's relatives.

Later, things take a strange turn when the main event of their trip, the Decemberfold, occurs. Tessa was strongly against the tradition, but when she finally sees it, she has a change of heart. This unique display involves a human-sized Christmas gift that is opened to reveal a group of living toys. The toys proceed to sing and perform a song-and-dance number. Although strange, the Decemberfold is a heartwarming family tradition that brings everybody together for a moment of joy and laughter.

As the holiday comes to a close, Tessa realizes that every family has its issues, and in the end, it’s what makes them unique. She resolves to make the best of the holiday and enjoy the luxuries of the Hamptons, while also starting the process of accepting her future to come.
