- 1 hr 46 min
After divorcing his wife when he finds out she's pregnant with another man's baby, Michael a high school music teacher moves back to Virginia and isolates himself making furniture. The only thing really meaning a lot to him now is a collection he has of gold coins, but when a politician crashes a car and seriously injures a woman he steals the coins and takes off into the night without another word from him. A few weeks go by and after returning from retrieving firewood from outside during a winter storm he is startled to find a toddler had wandered into his home while he was outside. Just a short distance away he discovers her mother in a car which had run out of gas. The child is actually fathered by a politician who keeps his paternity a secret. Since the child's mother is a heroin addict Michael is allowed to adopt the littler girl and he names her Mathilda. She proves to be a handful but Michael gets help from a local shopkeeper named Amy. He raises Mathilda to be a bright young lady and his once sour attitude is now turned into a man with a life worth meaning again. The politician waters her grow up and invites her into his home where he offers her horse-riding lessons and gives her her own horse. His own wife not able to carry to full term pleads on adoption and he reveals that he is her father. They take Michael to court for custody of the girl. During the custody battle the lawyers try to convince Mathilda she would be better off with her biological father but she insists she's happier with Michael. Due to the politician's wealth the Judge decides she would be better off with her real father. It is later found out that Michael is again wealthy after the gold coins are found and it is proven the politician stole them.
