Cool World is a 1992 American live-action/animated fantasy comedy film directed by Ralph Bakshi and starring Gabriel Byrne, Kim Basinger, and Brad Pitt. The film tells the story of cartoonist Jack Deebs (Byrne), who enters a whimsical and chaotic cartoon world called Cool World, only to fall in love with his own creation, a seductive femme fatale named Holli Would (Basinger). The movie opens in 1945 in Las Vegas, when cartoonist Jack Deebs is sentenced to prison for murdering a man he discovered in bed with his wife. While in prison, Jack is visited by a mysterious figure who claims to be from a cartoon world called Cool World, and Jack begins to sketch a comic based on his experiences in the imaginary land. Forty-seven years later, Jack is released from prison and returns to his hometown of Cool World, where he meets Holli Would, his own creation and a curvaceous cartoon vixen with a seductive smile and a devious plan to escape into the real world. Holli is determined to use Jack's comic as a way to cross over into reality, and she seduces him in order to do so. As Jack struggles to maintain his grip on reality, he finds himself in a race against time to stop Holli and save the real world from being overrun by cartoon characters. Along the way, he discovers the truth about Cool World and the mysterious figure who claimed to be from there. The film is a unique blend of live-action and animation, with the characters in the real world interacting with their counterparts in Cool World. The animation style is reminiscent of classic black-and-white cartoons, with exaggerated features and a whimsical tone. Gabriel Byrne delivers a strong performance as Jack, portraying him as a flawed and complex character who is haunted by his past and struggling to come to terms with his own mortality. Kim Basinger is perfectly cast as Holli Would, bringing her character to life with a sultry voice and sensual movements. Brad Pitt also makes an appearance as a detective investigating Holli's escape into the real world. The film tackles themes of lust, power, and the blurred lines between reality and fantasy. It also addresses the idea of creation and the responsibility that comes with it, as Jack struggles to control his own creation and prevent it from causing harm. Cool World received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics praising its imagination and boldness, while others criticized its disjointed plot and uneven tone. Despite its flaws, the film has since gained a cult following among fans of animation and fantasy, and remains a unique and entertaining entry in the genre.
