The Rocketeer is an early example of a superhero movie based on a DC comic book series by Dave Stevens that had a short run. Directed by Joe Johnston, it was produced by Walt Disney Studios and stars Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Paul Sorvino and Timothy Dalton. Set in pre World War II Hollywood, the plot revolves around a stolen jet pack for solo manned flight that was developed by Howard Hughes. It comes into the possession of Peevy (Arkin), a mechanic, and his friend, Cliff (Campbell), a stunt pilot, after the mobsters who stole it fail to survive a car crash. The mobsters, led by Eddie Valentine (Sorvino), have been hired by screen idol Neville Sinclair (Dalton), whose character is based on swashbuckling screen icon Errol Flynn.

Cliff tries the jet pack and becomes dubbed “The Rocketeer” as he draws attention from his flights. This causes Cliff even further difficulties with his girlfriend, Jenny (Connelly), an actress who has also caught the attention of Sinclair. With Sinclair, the Mob, the FBI, and Howard Hughes all trying to track down Cliff to retrieve the missing jet pack, The Rocketeer is filled with Nazi plots, Hollywood splendor and a good sense of humor.
