Anthropophagous is a horror film from 1980, directed by Joe D'Amato. The movie follows a group of tourists on a yacht traveling through the Aegean Sea. As they journey through the picturesque islands, they are suddenly thrust into a nightmarish world of evil and brutality when they encounter a cannibalistic humanoid on one of the islands.
The movie opens with a scene of a man and a woman sailing on a yacht toward the Greek islands. The mood is light as they joke around and enjoy the stunning scenery. The couple is joined by another group of tourists: a married couple, their young daughter, and another woman. The group makes their way to a small Greek island where they find no one around. They decide to search for the villagers, but they found the place has been deserted.
As they explore, they come across a bloodied, decayed corpse, and they quickly realize that something sinister is at play. In a moment of terror, they spot a monstrous, cannibalistic humanoid lurking in the shadows. The creature, who is revealed to be a former fisherman from the island who has turned to cannibalism as a result of famine and isolation, begins to hunt down the tourists one by one.
The rest of the movie is a gruesome and violent battle between the tourists and the cannibalistic humanoid. The creature, who is incredibly strong despite his malnourished appearance, uses his brute force to capture and kill his victims. The tourists are forced to fight back with whatever they can find on the island.
One of the most disturbing aspects of the movie is the amount of gore and violence. The creature doesn't just kill his victims, he eats them. The camera lingers on scenes of disembowelment, decapitation, and other grotesque acts of violence. The scenes are not for the faint of heart and it can be difficult to watch.
Despite the film's violent content, the acting is quite good. Tisa Farrow, who plays the lead character Julie, delivers a convincing performance as a woman who must fight for her life. She expresses horror at the creature's actions, but also shows determination and resourcefulness when it comes to saving her own life and the lives of the other tourists. She is the moral compass of the group and her strong survival instict is what keeps the other tourists fighting.
The other actors also deliver quality performances, with the exception of the poorly written character of Carol. She induces the violence in the story. She suggested they should explore the island alone, and it is ultimately her actions that leads to the creature's hunting spree.
In conclusion, Anthropophagous is not for the faint of heart. It is a disturbing and violent horror movie, which capitalizes on the idea of a cannibalistic humanoid. Despite the graphic violence, the movie has moments of tension and suspense. The performances of the actors, especially Tisa Farrow, are solid and add emotional depth to the story. The gore is not just for the sake of being gory, but serves as a catharsis of a story of cruelty, violence and despair. The movie is certainly not one of the best in the horror genre, but it's definitely a memorable one thanks to its shocking content.
