Arangetram is a 1973 Tamil film directed by K. Balachander starring Pramila, Sivakumar and Kamal Haasan in the lead roles. The movie tells the story of a young girl named Charu who belongs to a traditional Brahmin family in Tamil Nadu. Charu's mother is a famous singer and wants her daughter to follow in her footsteps. Charu starts learning music at a very young age and becomes proficient in singing classical songs. However, her father is not happy with her choice of career and wants her to get married and settle down.

Meanwhile, Charu falls in love with her neighbour, Janardhan (Kamal Haasan), who is a progressive thinker and writer. But their love faces opposition from Charu's family as Janardhan is from a lower caste.

To prove her talent and gain her family's acceptance, Charu decides to perform her Arangetram, a traditional debut solo performance in the Indian classical dance form Bharatanatyam. She chooses to perform a complex dance drama based on the life of Lord Krishna.

The movie delves into the obstacles Charu faces in her personal life as well as in her pursuit of her passion for music and dance. Camaraderie and conflicts between characters is a major element of the movie.

The film explores the themes of love, casteism, familial pressures, and the changing times of Indian society. Despite its release decades ago, these themes are still relevant and add relevance to the movie.

Pramila delivers an outstanding performance in the role of Charu, portraying the character's depth and emotions with ease. Kamal Haasan, who plays her love interest, is at his charming best in a supporting role. Sivakumar delivers a commendable performance as Charu's father.

The music in Arangeetram is an integral part of the movie, from the background score to the songs themselves. The songs, composed by veteran Music Director M.S. Viswanathan, are still popular among Tamil music lovers.

Overall, Arangetram is a classic movie that offers an insightful portrayal of Indian society and culture whilst being a truly entertaining and enjoyable watch.
