At Play in the Fields of the Lord is a 1991 dramatiic movie that was directed by Hector Babenco. The movie was based on a book by the American writer named Peter Mathiessen. Jean-Claude Carridge and Babenco wrote the screenplay. The movie starred Kathy Bates, ,John Lithgow, Aidan Quinn, Tom Waits and Tom Berenger. Saul Zaentz, producer, was the first one that wanted to make the book into this movie in 1965. He found out that MGM owned the movie rights to the book. He tried for several years to get this property from MGM. Soon after there were new executives at MGM in 19888, he bought the movie rights for $1.4 million. Most of the movie was filmed in Belen, Brazl. The movie was released to movie theaters in December of 1991. The plot revolves around a tribe called Naruna in the Brazilian jungle. Gold miners want them moved so they can dig for gold. Missionaries want to save their souls. A priest wants to set up a Catholic post. They all end destroying the tribe. The missionaries end up giving them a disease that nearly wipe out the tribe. The gold miners send bombers that end up killing the remaining Naruna. The Naruna would have been fine without the interference of the outside world.
