On May 26, 1978, Big Wednesday was released to rather terrible reviews and a release of a mere 4.5 million for the box office. It was quickly pulled from the theaters to wind up as one of the major cult classic films from that generation. Director John Milius used his memories of Malibu during the mid-late 1960's to help create the films portrayal of the different stages of life three surfers find themselves in. Although, there were dozens of surfing movies written and produced during those times. Big Wednesday is one of the only that stuck and grew larger audiences throughout the years. The main problem upon its release was due to its poor marketing. It was released as a surfing movie, when in fact it was a movie about the ages. It travels through the partying of youth, to the Vietnam War, and through the counterculture of the times, until the grasp of adulthood.
