A modern epic set against the rich background of Chicano culture in east Los Angeles, this picture traces the lives of three young men who have grown up together as brothers--Miklo, Cruz and Paco--and whose lives are inextricably and forever linked. During a span of 12 years, their adult lives take diverse and unexpected turns in their individual quests for survival and power. Half-brothers, Paco Aguilar and Cruz Candelaria, and their cousin, Miklo Velka, have grown up sharing dreams and rivalries. Paco is a proud barrio warrior with a volatile temper. Cruz is a gifted artist who paints images of his culture and its roots. Miklo, half Chicano and half Anglo, never quite fits in; his blue eyes and white skin keep him forever an outsider. A life-shattering episode is about to take place, one spontaneous decision, born in the heat of the moment, which will ricochet through each of their lives, taking them down roads none of them could ever have imagined.
