Kirk Douglas stars in this 1966 action movie as real life Jewish-American military expert Colonel David Mickey, Marcus who was recruited by Israel to train its raw recruits to defend the country against armed incursions from neighboring Arab states shortly after World War II. Marcus has to first convince his old commanding officer, played by John Wayne, now a Pentagon official, to allow him to go to Israel, and then, once there, he has to convince skeptical members of the Israeli paramilitary force, Haganah, to trust him.

After initial success, Marcus briefly returns to America and his wife, played by Angie Dickinson. But his heart remains in Israel, and Marcus soon finds himself once again in Israel, now with the Israeli equivalent rank of general in the Israeli Defense Forces.

The determined Marcus forges a fighting force from a ragtag group of recruits and prepares a massive humanitarian truck convoy to save the starving residents of Jerusalem.
