Dr. Dolittle is a comedy family film starring Eddie Murphy among a host of other stars. In the film, Murphy plays a doctor who has the power of being able to talk to animals. The film also brings to light the struggles and blessings that come with such a gift. The film begins with a young John Dolittle (Murphy) talking to his dog and discovering his gift. His dad, who overhears this conversation, does not hear the dog speak like a human. After some moments go awry for John due to his conversations with animals, the father thinks John is possessed and hires an exorcist. During the exorcism, the dog bites the exorcist to protect John, whom she has befriended, and in turn John's father gives her away, deeply saddening John but helping him realize the consequences of his gift. The film flashes forward thirty years, and we quickly realize that John has since disassociated himself with animals, gotten married and had two children. Eventually, the Dolittles take a vacation to the country, where John's powers began to overtake him again and he learns to reconnect with animals and stop disliking them like he had been. Some emergency situations arise, and John has to use his gift to help save animals' lives. His wife is upset at first, because she thinks he may be crazy, but instead he convinces her he is not and that his gift is legitimate. Upon a visit to the zoo, a tiger named Lucky has some problems and needs help fast. John figures out by talking with the tiger that a blood clot in his head is the cause and does emergency surgery to save the tiger, thus winning over the humans who had previously doubted him as well as the animals. The movie closes with John becoming a veterinarian as well as a human doctor and the family coming closer together and embracing his gift.
