Harlem Nights - is a fictional movie with crime, drama and comedy for days, starting some of the funniest entertainers in Hollywood. Eddie Murphy wrote and directed this lavish production; however his directing only won him a nomination for worst director. Grossing three and a half times what it cost to make the movie, Eddie Murphy laughed his way to the bank. The movie opens with Vernest "Quick" Brown played by Eddie Murphy, around 8 years old saving Sugar Ray played by Richard Pryor, from being stabbed to death. They then team up in a father son relationship, to run Sugars after hours spot in 1918. At Sugars you can dance, gamble or find a lady of the night all under one roof. At the end of each night everyone reports to Sugar and Quick to tally up the evenings proceeds. As Vera played by Della Reese, enters the room Quick accuses Vera of being late and short of money. The two of them fighting in the alley is classic and one of the funniest scenes in the movie. A local gangster named Bugsy Calhoune played by Michael Lerner, notices his after hours spots are losing money. He sends Dominique La Rue played by Jasmine Guy and Tommy Smalls played by Thomas Mikal Ford to look into Sugar's establishment. After they report back, Bugsy Calhoune sends his paid cop Officer Phil Cantone played by Danny Aiello, to ruffle the feathers of Sugar Ray and Quick. This is when Sugar and Quick plot to make a lot of money, take care of Officer Cantone and Bugsy Calhoune all in one night. Harlen Mights is a movie that is action packed, with outstanding period costumes and the funniest comedic lines imaginable. This classic movie will make you laugh over and over again, every time you see it like it was the first time.
