Those women are not enamored by the inept and gawky Thomas. Just when Serena is about to give up on finding love for Thomas, she meets an old fisherman and his son who are searching for a mermaid. Serena, who shares her father's love for ancient mythology, meets Nereid, a beautiful mermaid. Serena asks Nereid to help her father decipher the ancient Greek parchment for his research. Nereid agrees to help him. Together they speak the ancient love spell which causes them to fall in love with each other. Thomas begins to understand that the writing on Serena's book is the key to comprehending all the ancient text, allowing him to continue his research. Nereid surrenders her immortality to become a human being so she can travel back to the States with Serena and Thomas where Thomas's thesis is received as a great success.
