The 1981 American horror movie Ghost Story is based on the 1979 book by the same title by Peter Straub. The story takes place in a small New England town where four elderly men have formed what they call the Chowder Society, a club where they swap scary stories. The four friends that make up the club include Ricky Hawthorne, a business owner; Sears James, a lawyer; Dr. John Jaffrey; and Edward Charles Wanderley, the Mayor. Edwards’s son David, who lives in New York, falls from a window when the girl he has been sleeping with turns into a demon. Upon David’s death, Edward’s other son Don, a college professor returns home. The four elderly men become stricken with nightmares and become unsettled. One night Edward goes for a walk across a snowy bridge. When he sees the same demon that caused David’s death, he, too, falls to his ending. Although his death is ruled as a suicide, his son and friends disagree. Don approaches the remaining three friends and offers them a scary story of his own. He claims he had a wild affair with a woman, Alma, who came to work at his university. When he found something out about her, he ended the relationship. Just before David’s death, Don received a call from his brother saying that he was to wed this girl. Jaffrey soon dies of a heart attack, and the two remaining friends tell the truth about a woman named Eva whom they accidently killed when she was younger after she had an affair with Edward. Believing she was dead, they put her in her car and dumped her in the lake. She came to and was screaming for help; however, she went down with the car. The movie ends with only Don and Ricky alive and Alma/Eva’s body being retrieved from her car in the lake.
