Ted needs Bobby to read him the newspaper every day because his eyesight is failing. Ted asks Bobby to read him the lost pet announcements in particular. Bobby does not because he is afraid if he does, Ted will leave. Ted has the ability to read people’s mind and he uses that to protect Bobby. One day, Bobby and his friends are being harassed by the town bully. Ted is able to protect them because he discovers that the bully is cross-dresser. He does this all by looking into his mind. Bobby’ mom begins to worry that Ted is a child molester. She finds him comforting her son and accuses him. Ted then looks into her mind and finds out that he has been sleeping with her dead husband’s boss in order to pay off money the family owes him. Bobby’s mom is shocked that Ted knows this and she realizes that he has magical powers. Ted then decides to leave town because he is being pursued by what he calls the “low men”. Unfortunately, they catch up with Ted and capture him. Ted is being driven away and yells out to Bobby that he has a great time with him. Bobby and his mother then move to Boston so they can start a new life. Later, a grownup Bobby looks back on this time in his life and reflects on it.
