Kyle LeBlanc is an American industrial worker, who moved his wife for a job in Russia. Coming home on another late night, Kyle talks to his wife on the phone and hears the sounds of an intruder. He races home through traffic, only to find his wife dead in their home. His wife's murderer is found not guilty of his crimes due to a lack of viable evidence. This sends Kyle into a fit of rage, where he shoots the man dead, right in the courthouse. Kyle is sentenced to life in prison. The Russian prison he is sent to is very cruel. The guards and warden are quick to show the levels of their inhumanity. Kyle is singled out for refusing to remove his wedding band and smuggling a picture of his wife into the prison. Later that night, a young prisoner, Billy, is taken from the cell. The guards bring him to one of the seasoned prisoners. The crooked warden and his guards run the prison by accepting bribes and giving favorable treatment to those prisoners. Kyle learns of the prison fights that take place to entertain the warden. The fights are vicious and end in the loser's death, while the official's place bets and watch at a safe distance. The warden has his eye on Kyle as a possible candidate for a fight. The story continues, bringing Kyle to fight and eventually lose himself in the process. While other crimes go on within the prison walls, Kyle begins to realize the sickness of these actions and refuses to fight. The story shows the growth of man against the crooked behaviors of those in charge of him and his life. He leads the prison to overcome the twisted position the officials put them in, and with unlikely friends, bring the warden down.
