In The Hive is a dramatic film that was written by Cheryl L. West, based upon the inspirational true tale of an experimental charter school located in rural North Carolina known as Bertie County. The school is meant to handle children caught up in gangland violence, as well as other at-risk youths. Directed by Robert Townsendco, the film features Michael Clarke Duncan, Loretta Devine, Roger Guenveur Smith, Ali Liebert, B.J. Clinkscales, Michael Coley, Percy Daggs III, Lavon Davis and Tracey Dukes. The story follows Xtra Keys, a sixteen year old boy who lives by the sword in a world that is driven by violence of a retaliatory nature. His survival depends upon his ability to be steely and emotionless with everyone. The only person who is immune from his hard persona is his infant son. It is Xtra's hope to raise his son in a much better environment than he and his siblings were raised in with his alcoholic mother. His father abandoned the family very early in his life and he has had no contact with him. When Xtra is brought to the world of HIVE, he immediately must adjust to this new and unorthodox school. Like him, there are many other boys who have been discarded from society due to their substandard grades and disciplinary issues. Virtually all of them have been abandoned and thrown out of every school in the Southern rural county. For these black, HIVE may be their very last chance before they wind up in jail. However, their first order of business is to persevere at all costs under the indomitable Ms. Inez. She is based upon the real life Vivian Saunders. They will also need to contend with his towering assistant, the gracious Mr. Hollis. The school is ruled with a combination of care, soul food, discipline and high expectations of excellence - none of which the boys are prepared to deal with.
