Kyra Sedgewick stars in this dreamy look into the life of a woman who is waging a battle with her past and the desire to build a future. Loverboy has an eclectic cast of renowned actors including Sedgewick as Emily, Kevin Bacon as her father, Marissa Tomei as her mother, and Matt Dillon “the male object.” Loverboy is adapted from the novel by Victoria Redel and is an attempt at picturing universal love through the filter of tumultuous influence and harsh past realities. The main character is a mother trying to explain to her young son how it is he came into being. She tries to gently explain, through a unique form of sociopathy, why he is special. Unknown to her son, her own past includes neglect, forced maturity and romanticized notions of reality. Emily, portrayed by Kyra Sedgewick, is locked between the desires of an unfulfilled wounded soul, and the undying need to own a sense of normalcy through the protective and sheltered life of her son. Kevin Bacon, veteran actor and director, employs many members of his own family in this intimate and sometimes uneasy adaptation of this extremely acclaimed novel. Loverboy contains hints of universal truth and pain, but dares to artistically portray skewed and romanticized views or idealized human relationships. Proactive storytelling and flashback scenarios are an integral part of the overall tenor of Loverboy, and director Bacon’s reminiscent style. Loverboy is a film which presents familial love as a product of want and right, not propriety and idealism. The main character pulls the viewer into to a tumultuous childhood, search for personal identity, need for interrelational supremacy and eventual release through empathy. Loverboy is a passionate equivocation of longing and human respite and control.
