Malcolm X is a gripping account of the life of the African-American human rights activist of the title. Directed and co-written by the ever controversial Spike Lee, a difficult production marred by protests and disputes did not prove to be a negative influence on the film's eventual quality, as it was nominated for many awards. The film follows Malcolm X's life from his incarceration for burglary, to his tenure as a Muslim minister and his advocacy for the rights of blacks. Denzel Washington was praised in particular at the time of release for his performance in the movie, in fact being nominated for the Academy Award for best actor, although he would not win the award until several years later. Malcolm X is a meticulously researched representation of one of the most controversial figures in American history.
