In the summer of 1936, writer Miguel de Unamuno initially supports the military rebellion in Spain, but he's dismissed as Dean by the Republican government. As Franco advances and consolidates power, the war grows brutal and Unamuno's colleagues are imprisoned. Witnessing the consequences, he begins to question his stance. When Franco relocates his headquarters to Salamanca, Unamuno visits him to plead for clemency.
