Office Space

"Work sucks."

Office Space is a satirical comedy about a group of coworkers at a technology firm who hate their mundane nine to five jobs and seek another route to financial freedom and happiness in life. The film is directed by Mike Judge and portrays a group of men who work at the company Initech and hate their lives because of it. The main character in the movie is an IT programmer named Peter who spends most of his work day zoning out and attempting to do nothing.

Seeking help for his seemingly hopeless life in an occupation he despises, Peter goes to see a hypnotherapist who puts him into a relaxed, care free state of mind. The doctor is struck by a sudden heart attack and dies on the scene, leaving Peter in the relaxed state of mind that he was put in. Waking up the next morning, he decides he is going to stay home and not do anything. Peter transforms from a high-strung individual to a complete worry free person who has no desire to return to his work. Despite having this state of mind and openly discussing his lack of desire to put effort into his work, he is promoted. This isn't taken well by his coworkers due to the fact that they are downsizing the company and they are each fighting to keep their jobs.

Peter convinces two of his coworkers to embark in a plan that will allow them all the financial freedom to engage in his dream, which is to do nothing. They put a hack into the companies computer system, that is supposed to deposit fractions of cents into a separate account that they can access, in the idea that the company will never notice such miniscule amounts of money. However, the plan backfires due to a misplaced digit, and the trio accidentally steals hundreds of thousands of dollars overnight.

Fearing going to prison, they decide the only way to handle the situation is to come clean to the company. However, the trios luck takes a turn and they are handed a solution to their problem. Office Space depicts the widespread occupational dissatisfaction in America and a group of friends attempt to escape this ever-present reality.
